追い詰める

＊checkmate　チェスや将棋で勝つ、詰めるという意味のほか、相手を打ち負かすという意味でも使える。
→Let’s hope this plan will checkmate them.
　この計画で彼らに勝つことができるといいけれど。
→She can always checkmate me within 20 moves.
　彼女はいつも２０手以内で私をチェックメイトに追い込む。

＊hunt … down　（追い求められている人物を）捜索した結果追い詰める。
→Were they able to hunt down the suspect?
　容疑者を追い詰めることができたの？
→We will hunt down terrorists.
　テロリストたちを確実に追い詰めます。

問い詰める

＊interrogate …　尋問する。強硬な態度では、あるいはオフィシャルな場で相手を問い詰める時、または相手にいくつも質問を浴びさせる時に使う。
→I feel like I’m interrogating you.
　これじゃあまるで尋問しているみたいね。
→They’re interrogating the suspect now.
　今容疑者を尋問しているところだよ。

＊grill …　誰かを激しく問い詰める、尋問する。かなりカジュアル。
→Lawmakers grilled the prime minister during the Diet.
　議員たちが国会中、首相を問い詰めた。
→Why does mom always grill us?
　どうしてママはいつも私たちを問い詰めるの？
