置く、敷く

＊put …　物理的なものを置く。手など身体の一部を置くほか、物理的なもの全てに使える。
→Can you put this on the table?
　テーブルにおいてくれる？
→Let’s put some flowers here.
　ここに花を置こう。

＊set …　置く。物理的なものを置くときに使う。putと比べ、置いている時間が長いとき、また「設置する」ときにも使う。
→Do you want to set the vase here?
　花瓶はここに置く？
→Where do you want to set the desk?
　デスクをどこに置く？

＊lay …　何かを横たわらせる、体の一部を置く。
→I laid my hands on his shoulders.
　私は彼の肩に手を置いた。
→She laid the baby on the bed.
　彼女はベッドに赤ちゃんをベッドに置いた。

布団を敷く

＊lay … out　布団、マットレスを敷く。
→Can you lay out the mattress for the guests?
　お客さんたちのためにマットレスを敷いてくれる？
→Do you know how to lay out a futon?
　布団の敷き方を知っている？
