しそうだ

＊be likely to do …　～するだろう（推測）。～する可能性がある、というニュアンス。
→He’s likely to be late today.
　彼は今日遅くなるだろう。
→We are likely to finish by tomorrow morning.
　明日の朝までには終わるだろう。
→Japan is likely to roll out the COVID vaccines in late February.
　日本は2月下旬にコロナワクチンの接種を開始するだろう。

しそうにない

＊be unlikely to do …　～しないだろう（推測）。～する可能性が少ない、というニュアンス。
→It’s unlikely that the pandemic will end anytime soon.
　パンデミックが終わる日は近い将来ありそうにない。
→They’re unlikely to cut salary.
　彼らが減給する可能性は好くなさそうだ。

今にも～しそうである、寸前である

＊be on the verge of … / be on the brink of… ～する寸前である。vergeはふちやへりという意味で、brinkはがけっぷちという意味。ネガティブなことに使うことが多い。
→I was on the verge of a minor mental breakdown until you texted me.
　あなたがメッセージをくれたとき、私はメンタルが崩壊する寸前だった。
→She was on the verge of crying.
　彼女は泣く寸前だった。
→Eateries have been on the brink of closing down because of the pandemic.
　パンデミックのせいで、飲食店は閉店寸前だ。

～しそうになる（でもしてない）

＊almost …（動詞）　～しそうになる、～するところである。
→Wow, I almost forgot.
　うわあ、忘れるところだった。
→I’m almost finished with work.
　私はもうすぐ仕事が終わる。
→It was so moving that I almost cried.
　感動しすぎて泣くところだったよ。
→He almost died.
　彼はあと少しで死ぬところだった。

＊come close to …ing　 危うく～しそうになる
→I was so mad I came close to hitting her.
　私は怒りすぎて、彼女をたたくところだった。
→I came this close to quitting my job.
　私はもう少しで仕事を辞めるところだった。
