取って代わる

＊replace　取り替える、交換する、入れ替える。物の位置を置き換える時にも使う。
→Should I replace these books?
　この本、（別のものと）入れ替えようか？
→I will never be able to replace this ring.
　この指輪の代わりになるものはない。

＊substitute　代用する。物を代用する時、また誰かの代役を務める等に使う。
→You can substitute oil for butter.　
オイルの代わりにバターを使うことができる。
→He cannot substitute for her.
　彼は彼女の代役を務めることはできない。
