耐える

＊put up with AA　AAを我慢する。煩わしさをある程度、一定期間我慢する時に使う。程度が軽い
→I cannot put up with you anymore!
　もうあなたにはうんざり！
→I can’t understand how you can put up with the noise.
　この音をどうやって我慢できるのかわからない。
→Thank you for putting up with me.
　いつも私に付き合ってくれてありがとう。

＊stand …　不快なものに「耐える」、特定の状況に置かれている中で、立ちながら耐えているイメージで覚える。bearと比べ、対象物を個人的に嫌っているという感情が強い。
→I can’t stand this smell.
　この匂い、耐えられない。
→Can you stand the pressure?
　プレッシャーに耐えられる？

＊bear …　負担や困難、物理的な重さなどに「耐える」イメージ。
→The pain is more than I can bear.
　痛みは我慢できないほどだ。
→How can you bear his attitude?
　どうして彼の態度に耐えられるの？

耐え抜く

＊get through AA　難しい状況をやり「抜く」。put up with AAやbearと比べると、耐えている期間が長い。
→I don’t think they can get through the winter.
　彼らは今年の冬を越えられないと思う。
→You need to get through the first five minutes, and you’ll be fine.
　最初の５分を耐えられれば大丈夫だよ。

＊undergo …　辛い経験、大変なことなどを耐え抜く。
→She will undergo surgery next month.
　彼女は来月手術だ。
→The company is undergoing a radical change.
　会社は激変している。

＊last (out) …　大変な困難に耐え抜くとき、また生き抜くに使う。
→Which team will be able to last until the finals?
　決勝までもつのはどのチームだ？
→How can they last out without food?
　食糧ぬきで彼らはどうやって生き抜くのだ？

＊hold out …　特に敵の物理的な攻撃に耐え、生き抜いているときに使う。
→The people held out against constant attacks.
　人々は絶え間ない攻撃にも耐えた。
→They can stay for as long as supplies hold out.
　物資が続く限り、彼らはここに留まることができる。
