与える、供給する

＊give　万能。一番よく使う。無料で提供する、与えるイメージ。
→They’re giving free food on the first floor.
　一階で食べ物が無料で配られているよ。
→He gave me roses for my birthday.
　彼は私の誕生日にバラをくれた。
→Can I give you a hug?
　あなたをハグしてもいい？

＊offer　提供する。giveと異なり、相手が受け取ったかは不明。
→She was offered a new position.
　彼女は新しいポジションを提案された。
→The chef offered a new menu.
　シェフは新しいメニューを提案した。

＊provide　提供する。必要なものを提供するイメージ。
→Blankets will be provided at the evacuation center.
　避難所でブランケットが提供された。
→The government should provide more financial support to eateries.
　政府はレストランにもっと経済的補償をするべきだ。

（権利・資格を）与える
→与えられる方が多いから受け身でよく使う

＊entitle　～する資格がある。ややかたい気はするが使う。
→You’re entitled to your own opinion.
　あなたは自分の意見を持つ資格がある。
→All students are entitled to use the library.
　生徒たちは全員図書館を使う資格がある。

（餌を）与える

＊feed　動物に餌を与えるという意味の他に、医療従事者が患者に、母親が子どもにご飯をあげるという意味で使う。より強い者がより弱い者にご飯をあげるイメージ。
→Don’t feed the stray cats.
　野良猫に餌を与えないでください。
→Nurses have to feed patients.
　看護師は患者に食事を与えなくてはいけない。

【番外編】breastfeed　だと「母乳を与える」という意味になる。

　コロナに感染している場合、授乳は安全なのでしょうか？

（宿題・課題・任務・役）を与える、割り当てる

＊assign　仕事や課題、業務などを人に割り当てる、宿題を出すという意味で使える。万能。
→I hate it when my boss assigns me work last-minute.
　上司に直前に仕事を与えられるのは本当に嫌だ。
→Which department were you assigned to?
　どの部署の担当になったの？
→How should we assign homework to students?
　生徒たちにどのように課題を与えるべきだろうか？

寄付する、あげる

＊donate　寄付する。寄付できる物（血、洋服、髪など）なら何でも使える。
→Americans donate a lot.
→I went to donate blood.
→Do you know where I can donate my old clothes?

＊give away　無料であげる。
→People give away tissues on the streets in Japan.
→Let’s give away this food to our neighbors.
→Starbucks is giving away coffee to frontline workers in December (Business Insiderより / Dec 2, 2020)

【番外編】giveawayで名詞になる。無料であげるという意味。
→Starbucks is bringing back its free coffee giveaway for first responders and health care workers as the number of coronavirus cases continues (USA Todayより / December 1, 2020)

席を譲る

＊give up one’s seat to AA　AAに席を譲る。
→I gave up my seat to an elderly.
→You should give up your seat to pregnant people.

（Aに税・義務などを）課す

＊impose　罰則、刑罰、税金などを「課す」。ややかたいがよく使う。
→Tokyo will impose a partial lockdown starting tomorrow.
→The U.S. wanted to impose tariffs on French luxury goods.
→With new law, Sweden gains power to impose Coronavirus restrictions (The New York Timesより / January 10, 2021)

（責任・罪を）負わせる

＊blame　〜のせいにする。万能でよく使える。
→Don’t blame me for your mistakes!
→Don’t blame him for what you did.
→It’s okay to blame the government.

（AAに…程度の）損害を与える

＊cause… damage to AA　損害を与える。
→Disasters caused $210 billion in damage in 2020 (CNBCより / January 7, 2021)
