諦める

＊give up　諦めたくないもの、長く続けていたものを諦める。続けていた習慣をやめるときにも使える。
→I knew you wouldn’t give up easily.
　あなたが簡単には諦めないと分かっていたよ。
→Don’t give up yet!
　まだ諦めちゃだめだよ！
→We cannot give up against the coronavirus.
　コロナウィルスに屈してはいけない。
→How did you give up smoking?
　どうやってたばこをやめたの（禁煙したの）？

【番外編】give up on AAだと、AAに見切りをつける、見捨てるなどという意味になる。
→The doctors gave up on him.
　医者たちは彼に見切りをつけた。
→My parents was about to give up on me when I quit high school.
　私が高校を退学したとき、私の両親は私に見切りをつけるところだった。

＊give in　諦める。give upと違い、たたかうことを諦める、相手に屈するイメージがある。
→I didn’t expect you to give in so easily.
　あなたがそんなに簡単にあきらめるとは思っていなかったよ。
→I don’t want to give in, but the work is draining me so much.
　諦めたくないけれど、仕事のせいで本当にエネルギーがないんだ。

＊drop （習慣、仕事、議論などを）やめる、中断する
→Let’s just drop this.
　もう中断しようよ。
→Can you just drop it?
　やめてくれない？
